The organic filter is used when maximum nutrient or trace metal removals are desired. Organic media filters are essentially the same as surface filters, with the sand media replaced with or supplemented with another medium. Two examples are the peat/sand filter, and the compost filter system. The assumption is that these systems will have enhanced pollutant removal for many compounds due to the increased cation exchange capacity achieved by increasing the organic matter.
