On a larger scale, existing stormwater management facilities often provide excellent retrofit opportunities, primarily because there is already space dedicated for the purpose of managing runoff. Older stormwater management facilities were often designed only to provide larger storm control (water quantity control) and not water quality or channel protection control. In these situations, fairly minor adjustments can be made to outlet structures to provide the target water quality and/or channel protection storage volumes. In some cases, this will result in less storage available for the large storm attenuation; however, it is sometimes feasible to increase the embankment height so that the large storm storage is not compromised.
